BUSTED. Selling Pot on Craigslist

An El Mirage man was arrested on suspicion of advertising marijuana for sale on Craigslist and selling it to an undercover Mesa police officer.

Mesa police arrested Carl Dean Coates, 52 of El Mirage, on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale Wednesday afternoon.

According to police reports, officers contacted Coates about his advertisement Tuesday.

Coates told police he sells a variety of medical marijuana called “Grand Daddy Purple” and would be in Mesa Wednesday.

Coates met with an officer at Fiesta Mall and sold two ounces for $580, according to reports.

Coates showed a green medical marijuana card and asked the undercover officer if he had a medical marijuana card. When the officer said he did not, Coates said he had never sold marijuana to anyone without a card, reports state.

After the transaction, Coates asked the officer if he was going to get a medical marijuana card and the officer asked Coates if he knew of a doctor who could get him a card.

Coates said he knew a “quack” who could get him a card for $275, according to reports.

Coates was stopped by police after he left the scene.

Coates told police he has been selling marijuana for the last month because his business has been slow, reports state.
